Ouran Host Dabu
I return from Anime Iowa!

The more I hear about the Ouran Host Club dub, the more I look forward to buying the DVDs. At Greg Ayres' panel (he voices Kaoru), things that were mentioned:

- Host Club dub will be keeping the Japanese honorifics! Your -Sempai, -kun, -san and etc.
- They're dubbing the intro and ending to English. Which I say good - I'm not learned in the ways of Japanese, and I like having a singable version in my own language. Note, they got either a Korean or Japanese pop singer to sing the English intro. But hate it or love it or neutral, here is a real bad phone-quality recording someone put up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFjAGE-bM1U
If the original is already readily available, I think it's great to dub all the way for those who do enjoy dubs. (Hell, I'd like to hear a YnM intro dub.)
- Ending theme is sung by some tech guy from Funimation's building that has never done voice work, lol. They were auditioning for possible singers and he went "Can I try? 8D" "You...sing?" "A bit." And it turns out he has a rock band on the side and is supposedly decent.
- Renge is voiced by Monica Rial.
- Most of the cast is a big fan of the anime.

Greg told us a story about the Host Club Pencil board that was up for auction (proceeds going to Red Cross to help out Iowa flood victims). Back when Ouran cast was announced at Expo, he got a pencil board for the dub cast to sign for the auction, with a big "We Love Iowa" on the top. When it got down the table to Travis Willingham (Mori) he went "Who's Iowa? :U" thinking it was a person. Heh!

PS: You know Princess Tutu? You know that guy, Femio? Vic did Femio's dub voice. Well, if he can do crazy love-love Femio, Tamaki's not too far from that sometimes.

AHA.

OH GOD.

Also, screencap for Nabari ep 20 I ran across: oh show, you and your Yoite pain-on. I tried to keep away from more spoilers since I'm watching the show with [info]vulchu and [info]revolutionaryjo. But Miharu and Yoite. D8 I just want them to be cute and happy together. So doomed.

Belated warning: eeey, general dub h8ters won't be responded well to. Thanks for stepping on enthusiasm. ♥ Try the next post on your FList.

I really liked the Magic Knight Rayearth intro and outro dub, so I sort of want to see how they did this one, even though I've never watched Ouran.

I want to hear the ending theme especially, since it's so fun.

That's the same audio from the one I linked, but simply imposed on the intro video.

I thought it was just a better camera angle or something. Anyways, I didn't link that to be snarky or anything - I just thought you might like to see it with better video quality.

I realize now that I. . . I'm one of those fans. You know, the fans who reel in horror when things like this happen. No offense to one of the posters above, but the MKR dub songs were so bad my ears almost bled. Granted, this sounds much better quality-wise. . . but. . . there's no happy "bigaku!" at the end. T.T

However, I like the honorifics thing. FLCL did that and it's one of the best dubs I've ever seen.

I sort of wish they would have Gurren Lagann-ed this and gave us a speedy sub only (releasing the hyb version later for those who wanted it). :-( I'm pretty sure I won't be watching the dub so it kind of sucks I have to pay for it.

Yes, you are. This is why you can stick to the Japanese. Otherwise, your other option if you don't want to pay for a dub, is to illegally download like the rest of us.

>>They're dubbing the intro and ending to English.

That is probably the worst thing idea I have ever heard, and will really discourage me from actually buying the DVDs, unless when listening to the Japanese audio I get the Japanese openings, a'la Rayearth. I think Rayearth did that, at any rate. I like Sakura Kiss and Shissou too much to listen to some American hack sing them - I love Kawabe Chieko and Last Alliance too much. I won't judge the dub quality based on the cam recording.

Geez, learn to Set Audio to Japanese dude. Most DVDs come with dubs, and you are discouraged that this particular dub has even more features that you'll probably never listen to? pshh.

Sorry, I don't want to listen to American voice actors, espeically the pompousness that is Greg Ayres, not to mention Vic Mignona, or however you spell his last name. I'll listen to Sakamoto Maaya and everyone else I loved in Japanese.

Hey, I love the seiyuus too, and I'm aware English voice actors will almost never measure up to the original. That's fine if you don't want to listen to English. I request that you take general dub belly-aching elsewhere.

Sorry that my viewpoint doesn't agree with yours, but I can still make a comment about it. If you break news like that you can expect it to happen.

Yes, but where that comment can go is back to your own LJ please. Which I see has happened, so great.

Ok, remind me to never comment on your LJ again, because clearly you can't handle someone disagreeing with you.

Also. What gave you the impression the dub intro/ending is the only option available. :P Think Fruits Basket. English in full, or Japanese in full.

Hence why I made the comment about getting both. I make no assumptions about the degree of asshattery of a DVD release until I get full specs. As much as people think Funimation is a great studio, I remember when it, well, wasn't all that.

You know, the fact that they're taking the time dubbing the opening and ending (and not doing some lame Naruto style dub opening with just rock music) kinda shows me that the voice actors/studio actually cares about the series and is putting some work into it. I kinda hate the speedy releases that has no dub available and is just subtitled with no real extras, then I feel like... what's the point in me buying it, it's like what I saw online only in a pretty box :(

Or that hilarious One Piece opening. I believe they do care about the product, hence the various added things like dub OP/ED, outtakes, commentary, or like in Princess Tutu with the "in the studio" showing behind the scenes process. I'm buying the DVD not because it's quality video (because hey, a lot of fansubs are of great quality), or even to "support my show" (some of us are on a budget), but I do want to see the Other Take on the series. And there will be commentary tracks.

Yes! I love the extras in Princess Tutu, the behind the scenes and the outtakes and commentary. I have way too many anime dvds that have no previews, no extras, no nothing, and it sucks. I like seeing the dub cast behind the scenes and how they approach the series, I believe Death Note does the same thing and they show them trying to capture the emotions of the characters and how they feel about the characters they play.

I still love my last episode of Yu Yu Hakusho where the four main voice actors are going through the final episode, making fun of the series and each other. Somehow they got to the topic of Kurama having no ass, but not being able to say ass on the commentary so they changed ass to "donkey," so Kurama is "donkey-less." That was pricelss!

While I disagree about the last part - I don't mind a sub-only box if that helps keep the industry rolling - I like that way of looking at it: hey, they're doing something extra to give it added value. That's a more positive way of viewing it, which is cool.

I...kinda... like dubs. *dodges lynchers*

Sometimes it's nice to actually watch something without having to read it too. Because if I wanted to read it, I'd read the manga?

Not that I don't like subbed anime as well... I guess it depends on the series and how well the english voice actors do. Also, I kinda have a soft spot for crappy dubs; the old Sailor Moon dubs are hilariously bad in a charming sort of way. :P

I could easily like either (or both) and just don't see the point in getting worked up about the whole sub vs dub thing. :\
